Program Notes:

Eternal Landscape

This work is dedicated to my life-long friend and band director Kevin Miller.  Over the years I’ve watched Kevin work with his students, and have admired him for his dedication to developing young musical minds.  It is this admiration that inspired me to compose an original composition in dedication to his final concert as Director of Music at Schaumburg High School.

“Eternal Landscape” is a musical portrayal of many of the great landscapes found in the American west.  Consequently, the musical language of the piece is reminiscent of some of the great mid-twentieth-century American composers, such as Aaron Copland, Vergil Thomson and Walter Piston. It was my aim to compose a piece which challenged Kevin’s students to play a bit outside of their comfort zone, while doing it in a style I felt they would enjoy.

Kevin’s dedication to music education has forever changed the lives of countless young adults and the musical landscape of future generations of music students.  Thank you Kevin for premiering this piece with your Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
